Emiliana Torrini Live Review - City Life, March 2009

Emiliana Torrini

By Stuart Holmes | Mon, 09 March, 2009

IT is difficult to see the petite Emiliana Torrini in the crowded Ruby Lounge this evening, and whilst this is admittedly frustrating for the majority of the crowd, her enchanting vocals still manage to belittle any such problems.

This is a rather belated show in promotion of last year’s album, Me and Armini, which covers many of the tracks from it, plus a collection from her notable back catalogue from the past decade.

She unassumingly wanders onto the stage behind her backing band to a strong reception and nervously introduces herself.

Her anecdotes and observations between songs come across as genuinely endearing as she shyly speaks in slightly broken English.

Whilst these jumbled personal exchanges show her true, fun-loving personality, her persona changes when she sings: her mind suddenly focuses on the personal subject matter of her songs and the results are captivating.

The musical style shifts between pop, folk and trip-hop, but her voice always remains delicate and beautifully soft. Her haunting rendition of Bleeder stands out from an impressive setlist and manages to silence the room (even the persistent talkers at the back) with the sadness it speaks of.

Emiliana and her band return for an unprepared encore consisting mainly of audience requests, including the popular Summerbreeze and Easy, which rounds up an intimate performance from a uniquely wonderful songstress.
