The Hola Mexico Film Festival's ten-day residency at the Dendy Newtown will include 16 features spanning drama, comedy and documentary film. The festival will showcase Mexico as a land of contrasts, through the eyes of the country’s many talented directors. Opening night is bound to set the tone with a fiesta featuring Mexican food, Sol beer and the premiere of Alvaro Curiel’s Acorazado (The Raft). Filmed in both Mexico and Cuba, it's the tale of an unemployed man (Silverio Palacios) who leaves his homeland in search of the American dream.
Other festival highlights include Salvanda Al Soldado Perez (Saving Private Perez), which is as action-packed as, but takes a much more light-hearted approach than, its Spielbergian namesake. El Infierno (Hell) explores Mexico's organised crime circles in a wickedly black comedic manner and forms part of a Luis Estrada trilogy.
An impressive four screenings will be packed into the final day of proceedings. Of these, La Otra Familia (The Other Family) is the standout, with its moving tale of a complex family arrangement.
