The KOFFIA Korean Film Festival is back again this August. Celebrating the Korea-Australia 'Year of Friendship', it will showcase some of Korea's best cinematic exports. Its 13 feature films and seven shorts are split between six key themes: Crime and Punishment, Brothers Divided, Indie Cinema, Bloody Friday, Extraordinary Ordinary Families and Ride the Dream.
The festival will open with The Unjust – a thriller from acclaimed director Ryoo Seung-wan (Arahan, The City of Violence), who will be appearing for a post-screening Q&A session.
Other highlights include Park Chan-wook's Joint Security Area; Lee Jeong-beom's The Man From Nowhere (pictured); and Bedevilled, the directorial debut of Jang Chul-soo – a must for slasher film lovers.
The festival's closing film, A Barefoot Dream – about a retired professional football player who goes on to coach East Timor's national youth team – is Korea's official submission for Best Foreign Film at the 2012 Academy Awards.
Despite its name indicating otherwise, the festival is not limited to the cinematic arts and will also include a programme of traditional dance performances, food tastings, live music and martial arts displays.
