Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip Single Review - High Voltage, June 2010

Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip - Sick Tonight

Following on from their much loved debut album, Angles, comes a fresh track from its recent follow up, The Logic of Chance. Sadly, ‘Sick Tonight’ wanders into questionable drum ‘n’ bass territory and is noticeably lacking lyrically; both in content and quality.

Dan Le Sac’s beats lack the originality expected; sounding both hastily put together and dated. In addition, Pip’s verses are delivered without conviction, and the whole thing is overly reliant on a weak chorus. More than anything else, however, the track feels like it is trying to be a dance floor filler, rather than a crowd pleaser based on the original formula that worked so effectively for them first time round.

Thankfully, the accompanying single ‘Great Britain’ goes back to what Sac and Pip do best. It has their signature angular, chiming beats with social commentary (“Knife crime/It ain’t about knives”) plastered all over it; some rapped, some spoken. Much better, thanks.

Props to the boys for experimenting with their sound on this new record, but on the basis of this slice of it, the results of this are certainly mixed.
