Howls Single Review - High Voltage, September 2010

Howls - Hammock

“When he writes lyrics it’s like he’s seen a family film and then spliced it with a video nasty,” says Howls guitarist Dan Carey of his band mate, Manchester’s very own Stephen Fretwell.

This is rather exaggerated praise, but it goes some way to describe the sound of this new venture between Fretwell, Carey, Fretwell’s old friend Jay Sikora (formerly part of Badly Drawn Boy’s live band) and Oli Bayston (previously the front man of Keith).

Their debut single ‘Hammock’ focuses its attention on sinister imagery, unsettling rhythms and eerie melodies. It is a reasonably dark track but centres on a catchy drum loop which provides it with a surprising groove.

Howls have only played a handful of gigs to date (including their unsubtle debut at Glastonbury this summer), but this single does enough to ensure that there will be a full length tour imminently.

Additionally, its Southern Gothic roots and lyrics such as “howling at the moon” currently place it in alleged contention for a place on the forthcoming ‘Vampire Diaries’ soundtrack, which (if the Twilight saga is anything to go by) may well provide them with some deserved attention outside of Fretwell’s already large fan base.

Whether this prevails remains to be seen, but in its own right the track shines a light on a potentially dark secret which may well become common knowledge before too long.
