Love Amongst Ruin Single - High Voltage, August 2010

Love Amongst Ruin - So Sad

Three years ago, Steve Hewitt parted company with Placebo after over a decade spent as the band’s drummer. Since then, his focus has been channelled into the forthcoming eponymous debut album from his new band, Love Amongst Ruin.

Hewitt takes the lead in this new venture, becoming the front man rather than assuming his previously more familiar position at the back of the stage, à la Grohl.

The fruits of his efforts stand well in light of his past as a musician. ‘So Sad (Fade)’ is gritty hard rock offset with a melodic chorus. The pattern of ‘hard verse’ followed by ‘soft chorus’ continues until a rather predictable solo and fade out at the end of the track, but it’s decent enough.

Whilst there is no denying Hewitt’s musical integrity, there is little that is original enough here for it to realistically appeal to a new market outside of his established fan base.

There is an inevitable feel of Placebo here - both lyrically and musically - not to mention an evident acknowledgement of QOTSA (albeit turned down a notch or two), but aside from some slight electro sounding tweaks, both this single and the forthcoming album are likely to be purely for devotees.
