Spectrals Single Review - High Voltage, October 2010

Spectrals - Peppermint

On the edge of the Pennine hills, in the small town of Heckmondwike (a mere ten miles South East of Leeds) hails Louis Jones: the softly spoken, flame haired young man behind Spectrals.

Jones is yet another high class signing on the impeccable Moshi Moshi label, with the single ‘Peppermint’ being the lead offering from the forthcoming E.P. ‘Spectrals Extended Play’.

Fortunately, what he lacks in inventiveness when it comes to album titles, he more than makes up for it in musicality.

Much like its namesake, ‘Peppermint’ has greatly medicinal properties; such is the soothing effect of Jones’s dreamy, almost hypnotic, concoction of 60s soul and lo-fi, summery guitar pop.

There’s certainly a lot to get excited about here, and whilst the Phil Spector production methods are evident (the band name is surely something of a homage), the track is careful not to sway towards copy-cat territory.

Spectrals sound has unquestionable charm, and with Jones set to play numerous support slots across Manchester’s venues in the coming weeks and months, venturing out into the autumnal evening cold is now a warming prospect.
