Dead Confederate Single - High Voltage, August 2010

Dead Confederate - Giving It All Away

Dead Confederate hail from Athens, Georgia - the hometown of R.E.M. – and whilst their influence isn’t overly evident on this taster from their debut album, Sugar, there are some subtle nods to Stipe, Buck and Mills.

‘Giving It All Away’ is reminiscent of the aforementioned band’s earlier work, and other such sounds of the 80’s and 90’s; a fact furthered by their recent tours with Dinosaur Jr. and Meat Puppets, who have evidently shaped their progression as a band. There is a more psychedelic overtone to the whole production, however, which compliments lead vocalist Brantley Senn’s effective pitched (if indistinguishable) tone.

There are additional nods to a darker, alt-grunge sound which indicates that Dead Confederate is by no means a one trick pony. In line with this, the track has a surprising amount of weight for what is a fairly simplistic arrangement, and this makes the prospect of their full length L.P. a potentially interesting prospect.
